TWO IN A ROW!!!

WINCHENDON, Mass. — Just two games into the season, the Portsmouth Hockey team has already topped its win total from a year ago. Coming off a one-win campaign, the Clippers improved to 2-0 on the season by holding off Con-Val, 4-3, in Division III action at The Winchendon School.

Portsmouth held a 4-1 lead in the third period before the Cougars scored two goals late in the game, but the Clippers killed off two penalties in the final minutes of the third period to seal the win.

T.J. Cochran gave Portsmouth a 1-0 lead when he netted a goal with 6:51 left in the first period. Connor Young and Cam Berube were credited with the assists. Berube gave the Clippers a 2-0 lead late in the first on an assist from Spenser Schwartzmiller.

After Con-Val (1-1) scored its first goal early in the second, Berube responded with his second goal of the day to give Portsmouth a 3-1 lead with nine minutes left in the period. The Clippers took the 4-1 lead early in the third period on a power-play goal by Jason Heiman. Schwartzmiller had the assist.

The 2009-2010 started off on a fantastic note as the Clippers defeated the Sabres 2-0.  Scoring for PHS were Josh Heiman (assist from Jerry Witkowski) and Cam Berube.  John O'Keefe got the shut-out in net for the Clippers and the defense was led by Chris Kelloway and Spenser Schwartzmiller.  The Adair boys, Connor Young and TJ Cochran also played very well according to Coach B!

New outlook for Portsmouth

Al Brandano steps into his first season at Portsmouth with a lot of work in front of him. The Clippers went 1-16 in Division III last season, but Brandano sees a much-improved team.
"We are pretty encouraged," said Brandano. "We did well in the jamboree. We won some games and played well. ... We have to be strong defensively in order to win (and) we need to be very disciplined."
The defense will be anchored by senior captains Spenser Schwartzmiller and Chris Kelloway. In goal, the Clippers have two solid netminders in John O'Keefe and first-time goalie J.T. Pearson, who will try to transfer the skills he's developed as a catcher in baseball.
Connor Young, T.J. Cochran and Cam Berube will be called upon to lead the offense.
Brandano replaces Norm LaFleur, who stepped down after 10 years behind the PHS bench to spend more time with his growing family.
